Held annually in Georgetown, South Carolina, the Winyah Bay Heritage Festival features wildlife art and promotes conservation. The festival includes a dock dogs competition, duck calling contests, birds of prey demonstrations, a virtual fishing simulator and decoy painting for children. This year’s event, held at the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex, coincided with the Bassmaster Elite Tournament.

This is my second time shooting the event for our local paper. It was held previously at East Bay Park. The indoor facilities proved useful in the past for in-climate weather, but this year’s festival saw nothing but sunshine and mid sixties. While the dock dogs are a fan favorite, the hand-crafted items are what make this festival unique in my opinion. You can find hand folded knives with rare hardwood handles, fine walking canes and ships in bottles. The other attractions are somewhat unique as well. Kids can paint decoys and shoot safe tipped arrows and air guns. Local BBQ joints offer up hot, southern comfort food. There are some unique vendors as well, a fisherman’s paradise awaits in the various tackle, rod and boating displays.
